The Honddu Isaf Community Council replaced what was previously a number of parish councils approximately 30 years ago. The village of Lower Chapel is fairly central to the area and is the largest village. The other larger settlements include Sarnau, Pwllgloyw and Llandefaelog. The Honddu river runs the length of the geographical area. The Community Council’s northern boundary extends from above Castle Madoc eastwards towards Llaneglwys, looping below the forestry and across Llandefalle Hill. Turning southwards past Cwm Gwilym the boundary follows the road through Llandew to just above Brecon town. The southern boundary traces the edge of Lower Pontgwilym Farm where it meets the town. Turning north the boundary now follows the B4520 before turning west onto the road to Cradoc then encompasses Gwenffrwd, Llwyncelyn and Cefncoed Bach farms before turning east to rejoin the B4520 which it follows north returning to above Castle Madoc.

There are 2 churches, which continue to hold services in the council area, one at Llandefaelog and one in Lower Chapel. There are also 2 chapels one in Lower Chapel and a second between Lower Chapel and Pwllgloyw adjacent to the B4520.

There is a pub in Pwllgloyw, no retail premises and no concentrations of business premises in the area.

There are a number of public footpaths and bridleways traversing the community council area.

There is an ancient Motte at Castle Madoc.
